Scion Staffing (www.scionstaffing.com) has been engaged to conduct a search for a Development Director for our wonderful nonprofit healthcare client in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. This position is an exciting opportunity that offers the incredible chance to work with a dedicated team to help the seniors in our community daily.

The Development Director is responsible for planning and directing fund development activities for the Foundation Board. The Director reports to the CEO of the organization and has the primary responsibility to shape philanthropic relationships through its supporting foundation, our client’s Board of Directors, individuals, corporations, foundations, volunteers, and strategic partners, including other community-based organizations, to ensure the tactical implementation of all strategies. S/he will also work closely with our client’s Marketing/ Communications and Senior Leadership Teams to ensure that fundraising strategies align with the goals and direction set forth by the institution.

Job Responsibilities:

Development Planning and Implementation:

  • Partners with the CEO and senior management to align the fundraising and foundation strategy with the overall approach and mission of our client.
  • Initiates, cultivates, manages, and stewards relationships with the organization’s portfolio of foundation, corporate, and individual donors, and potential donors.
  • Collaborates with the CEO, Departments of Communication, Government Relations, Senior Leadership, Volunteer Management, and the Foundation Board of Trustees to build and implement the Foundation’s annual and long-range development plans, including major gifts, capital campaigns, direct marketing, foundation, and corporate relationships, planned giving and special events.
  • Partners with the Director of Communication and other resources to develop fund raising materials, events and outreach activities that maintain a constant branding image through use all presentations and communication pieces.
  • Creates and oversees the revenue and expense budgets for fund development activities.
  • Reviews and evaluates fund development plans, infrastructure, capacity-building, fostering and stewardship activities on a regular basis, and recommends adaptations as needed.

Staff and Volunteer Leadership Management:

  • Coordinates with the CEO, the Foundation Chair and Senior Leaders to support fundraising objectives, including developing the capacity of the Board of Trustees and Board Committees to support development goals.
  • Supervises: 1) 1.0 Full Time- Fund Development Manager, 2) .5 Part-time Development Assistant, 3) 1.0 Full-time Contracted Event Planner, 4) .5-.75 Part Time Foundation and Corporate Giving Manager, and a .5 Part Time Volunteer and Activities Manager
  • Leads and supervises the staff and volunteer development team to effectively implement a variety of fund development activities, including personal solicitations, preparation of high-quality proposals, grant reports and donor communications, execution of fundraising events, donor stewardship, and implementation of regular fund appeals.
  • Manages foundation and institutional fundraising to foster effective relationships including prospect research, funder relations, grant solicitations, fulfillment, and reporting, as necessary.
  • Supervises the Volunteer Manager (.5 FTE) to cultivate corporate and individual philanthropic partners through our client’s Volunteer program.
  • Contracts with fundraising specialists, including grant writer, event planner, production resources and other resources as needed.
  • Recruits and manages volunteers for fund development.
  • Oversees staff managing the fundraising database to ensure accuracy of all information and reports.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
  • 5-7+ years of proven experience in the fundraising / development field and a demonstrated success with volunteer board management.
  • Experience designing and implementing comprehensive fundraising plans for all funding streams including major gifts, corporate, foundation, and annual giving.
  • Experience in effectively engaging and leading senior staff and Board Members in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
  • Experience using fundraising databases, and strong computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets and PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms i.e., Zoom, Microsoft Teams.
  • Experience designing and implementing comprehensive fundraising plans through the full spectrum of media, including in-person, direct mail, email, telephone, text, events, print and social media.
  • Experience managing fundraising events of 250 and more people.
  • Experience in high profile volunteer management.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with proven ability to write effectively and speak persuasively and an ability to listen to and learn from others.
  • Excellent leadership, strategy, management, and organizational skills.
  • Experience supervising professional and administrative staff and contractors and consultants.
  • Well-organized with strong follow-thorough skills.
  • Strongly self-motivated, and able to effectively problem-solve complex issues.
  • Ability to work as a team player in a multi-cultural, inter-disciplinary setting.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed; drive and have a personal vehicle as needed.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • CFRE certification is desirable
  • Experience running capital campaigns
  • Experience serving on a nonprofit board
  • Experience or knowledge in the fields of healthcare, social services, or adult and aging services; personal experience caregiving for an older adult
  • Intellectual agility, high professional standards, and demonstrated ability to think creatively and strategically, and execute on multiple priorities simultaneously.

Professional Development and Standards:

  • Is resourceful and stays “dialed into” fund development industry trends by active membership in local and national fundraising professional associations, reading publications and attend various events to ensure our client is using best practices and ethical approaches in fund development.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all company procedures, results and information about participants or families.
  • Follows all our client’s Policies and Procedures and complies with all agency training requirements.
  • Maintains safe working environment by following our client’s safety policies and procedures.

Compensation:

The base salary ranges on this role $135-145k based on experience, a robust benefits plan including: Medical/Kaiser, Dental, Vision, Matching 403B, PTO, Holiday Pay, Tuition Reimbursement, and Extended Sick time, plus a phenomenal opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of seniors every day.
