Scion Nonprofit Staffing (www.scionnonprofitstaffing.com) has been retained to conduct a search for a Volunteer and Community Engagement Consultant for our client, a global nonprofit organization that recruits data science experts to work pro bono with visionary, high-impact social change organizations and solve an array of humanitarian challenges. This is a very exciting interim role with a collaborative and passionate team on a fully remote basis.
 
OVERVIEW
The Volunteer and Community Engagement Consultant will bring project management skills and a customer service orientation to support our community of volunteers. Since our inception eight years ago, over 20,000 data scientists from almost every country in the world have participated in one of our events or pro bono projects, some of whom have formally organized into a network of chapters based in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Bangalore, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. This is a full-time remote interim consultant role reporting to the Network Strategy Lead.
 
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
-Ensuring transparency and information flow between the organization volunteer chapter leaders and staff, as well as across chapters, through regular calls, project showcases, and strategy updates
-Managing the logistics for a virtual chapter network summit, in line with our network strategy
-Responding to ad hoc requests from volunteers staffing projects and across the broader volunteer community, troubleshooting with other teams as needed (Operations, Technology, Communications, Business Development, Programs)
-Creating and supporting community building activities for the organization’s extensive volunteer community
-Supporting the Programs team in engaging the volunteer community on defining and implementing Impact Practices, or planned groups of projects focused in the same field or sector (e.g., frontline health systems, economic resilience)
-Researching organizations with which to create strategic partnerships for the organization’s community and chapters
-Defining opportunities for community building that do not depend on in-person events in this COVID-19 context
-Supporting chapter efforts to define diversity in a way that is relevant to their region and can inform recruitment efforts for future volunteers
-Researching, testing, and rolling out new technologies or processes to streamline our work, e.g. collaboration with the Operations team on identifying a new process and software system for signing project contracts, or with the Communications team on projecting upcoming needs for swag to send volunteers
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
-Alignment with the organization’s mission and values, including the ability to build relationships across difference (e.g. culture, skillset, or time zone)
-Strong project management skills with track record of success on complex projects with multiple stakeholders in virtual environments; ideally, familiarity with or experience utilizing user centered and human centered design principles
-At least 3-5 years of professional experience, preferably including experience in a mission-driven or or startup environment
-Experience in volunteering and/or volunteer recruitment or management experience with knowledge of current trends and information about volunteerism
-Ability to come up to speed quickly on a technical issue and/or conversant in basic data science (e.g. able to explain what makes a humanitarian issue well suited to a data science solution)
-Ability to work effectively from home
-Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
-Experience working with Mac computers, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office suite; comfort learning new software systems quickly
-Acute attention to detail
