Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a General Counsel on behalf of a mission-driven, nationally recognized nonprofit organization. This is a rare opportunity to step into a senior leadership role as the organization’s top legal authority, partnering closely with executive leadership and the Board to guide strategy, mitigate risk, and support long-term growth and sustainability. This is a full-time, remote, direct-hire opportunity.

Position Overview
The General Counsel serves as the organization’s chief legal advisor and is responsible for overseeing all legal matters, risk management, and compliance initiatives. Reporting to executive leadership, this individual will provide practical, business-minded legal guidance while directly managing a wide range of day-to-day legal operations.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the primary legal advisor to executive leadership and provide guidance on complex, high-impact decisions
Identify, assess, and mitigate legal, financial, and operational risks across the organization
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts and agreements
Advise on employment and labor matters in partnership with internal HR leadership
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations across a multi-state workforce
Develop and implement internal policies, procedures, and legal frameworks to support organizational effectiveness
Support governance efforts, including Board relations, materials, and compliance matters
Manage outside counsel and external legal vendors for specialized matters
Partner cross-functionally on strategic initiatives, partnerships, and business development efforts
Lead or support negotiations for high-impact agreements and organizational initiatives
Qualifications & Experience
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar admission required
10+ years of legal experience, including senior-level or in-house counsel experience strongly preferred
Demonstrated experience advising organizations operating at a national or multi-state level (nonprofit, education, public sector, or related environment preferred)
Strong background in nonprofit compliance, employment law, contract negotiation, and risk management
Experience managing litigation, regulatory matters, and external counsel relationships
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: This role offers a competitive base salary of $150,000–$195,000, depending on experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, generous paid time off, paid holidays, parental leave, retirement plan with employer match, and professional development support.
